Piano Tuning

Picture
Things you need to know:

I love tuning pianos. Whether it's Grandma's hand-me-down spinet, a concert grand or a craigslist special, I love bringing back their voice.

I need two hours for a tuning appointment. It may not take that long, it usually doesn't. But it allows for a comfortable pace and gives some time to resolve small issues like a sticky key or squeaky foot pedal.

My goal is to leave your piano with a stable tuning.

Pianos that are at or near proper pitch can be tuned in one pass. If a piano is significantly flat or sharp of it's proper pitch, I perform an additional tuning pass called a pitch raise or pitch lowering. It is a fast, rough tuning that equalizes tension on all the strings at or near proper pitch. From this point, a fine tuning pass can be made leaving the piano stable and at pitch.

I recommend that pianos played regularly get tuned once a year, teaching pianos twice a year.

Strings can break during tuning. There is no predicting when a string will break. I assess string quality before I tune. If I notice potential problems, I will bring them to my customer's attention for discussion. My piano tuning fee does not include string breakage.
